And the use of prescription medications is increasing. According to the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, Americans spent $234.1 billion on prescription drugs in 2008, up nearly 600 percent from $40.3 billion in 1990. Given these statistics, it's likely that you or someone you love pops a doctor-approved pill every day.
