Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) is a type of birth defect that has been linked to using selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants during pregnancy. There has been recent research that has shown a link between the condition of PPHN and SSRI, and the drugs in this category are now being investigated by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to their higher than average rate of birth defects.
