If you are injured as a result of someone else's negligence, for example in a car accident, you are entitled to recover your damages. Generally, there are two categories of damages: 1) Special Damages; and, 2) General Damages. You can think of Special Damages (or "specials," as they are called) as damages that you can calculated using a receipt or invoice. These include lost wages, medical expenses and items you had to buy as a result of this accident. General Damages are damages that do not come with a receipt: pain and suffering, anxiety, etc.
