Emergency rooms are very familiar with burn injuries. People with serious burns often must visit the hospital for the immediate care they need. The severity of a burn injury is rated in degrees. A first degree burn is very minor. Running cool water over the affected area can help with the pain. Second degree burns may go slightly deeper into the epidermis, causing blisters. Third degree burns may reach into the deepest part of the epidermis, also known as the reticular dermis, causing scarring and contractures. Immediate care is important in decreasing the pain and shortening the length of the healing process. fourth degree burns pose the largest threat, and may reach so deep that they can damage bone.
