For a teenager there is rarely anything more liberating than getting a license. The freedom to go anywhere without having to wait for mom or dad, never having to walk to school again, being one step closer to becoming a responsible adult, and looking infinitely cooler in front of friends. What teenagers should know, however, is that with a car also comes responsibility and generally the need for automobile insurance, which can oftentimes be expensive for inexperienced drivers and young adults. In most states its illegal to even register an automobile without having an adequate vehicle protection plan, and for parents the presence of a licensed young adult could translate to higher rates because of the risk involved in insuring inexperienced drivers.
To determine the premium of nearly any motorist, insurers usually examine a variety of qualities, and sometimes age can have a large impact on rates for a number of reasons. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, motorist between the ages of 16 and 19 have a 4 times greater chance of being involved in an accident, and male teenage drivers are twice as likely to be involved in an accident than females. Statistics like these usually translates to auto insurance for teenagers being more expensive than the average policy. Locating an affordable protection plan, however, is not impossible. By doing an adequate amount of research and exploring a variety of options, young drivers may be able to keep coverage cost at a lower level.
