Work-related injuries and deaths are relatively commonplace in the oil and gas industry. According to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Statistics, 120 workers in the oil and gas industry suffered fatal injuries in 2008. Only 18 of these fatalities were attributed to explosions and fires. In 2007, 4,200 people were injured on oil and gas rigs. Most of these injuries had more mundane causes; 32.5 percent of injuries around oil and gas wells occurred when objects struck someone; while 21.2 percent of injuries involved the victim getting caught in equipment.
